10 Benefits of (Haitian) Coffee

haitian coffee health benefits

According to a recent report (February 2015), a panel of scientists gave coffee a glowing endorsement.

Even newer studies (Spring 2016) have more findings:  benefits of coffee to those with colon cancer .

Three to five daily cups of coffee aren’t associated with long-term health risks. In fact, coffee reduces risks for so many things.

Go ahead, pour yourself another cup & read our reasons why you should drink more #haitiancoffee.

Top 10 reasons why you should drink more (Haitian) Coffee:

1. It’s the KING of Antioxidants

Nothing else comes close to providing as many antioxidants as coffee (fruits and veggies have tons, BUT the human body seems to absorb the most from coffee).

Why this is important: Oxidation is a normal, every day bodily process. Junk food, sugar, salt, stress, smoking, alcohol, UV light and pollution accelerates it. When there are disruptions in the natural oxidation process, highly unstable and potentially damaging molecules called free radicals are created.

Antioxidants fight free radicals (reduce chances of cancer, lower high blood pressure, improve wrinkles, help your heart stay healthy among many other benefits).

2. Coffee makes you happier

A study done by the National Institute of Health found that those who drink four or more cups of coffee daily were 10% less likely to be depressed than those who don’t drink coffee.

Apparently it’s not the caffeine — Coke has significant amounts of caffeine, but it’s linked to depression (maybe it’s the 9 teaspoons of sugar??).

According to the researchers, the reason coffee makes you feel good is because of those awesome antioxidants.

3. Coffee consumption = lower levels of suicide

A study by Harvard’s School of Public Health determined that drinking between two and four cups of coffee daily can reduce the risk of suicide by a staggering 50%

The proposed reason is because coffee acts as a mild antidepressant by aiding in the production of neurotransmitters like serotonin, dopamine and noradrenaline. Now add in the knowledge that just by drinking Haitian, you’re helping some of the poorest farmers in the world pull themselves into prosperity, and it’s a double “YEAH!”

4. Coffee is great for your liver

A study published in 2006 that included 125,000 people over 22 years showed that those who drink at least one cup of coffee daily were 20% less to develop liver cirrhosis — an autoimmune disease caused by excessive alcohol consumption that leads to liver failure and cancer.

5. Coffee makes you a better athlete

The New York Times reports, “Scientists and athletes have known for years, that a cup of coffee before a workout jolts athletic performance, especially in endurance sports like distance running and cycling.”

Caffeine increases the number of fatty acids in the bloodstream, which allows muscles to absorb and burn fats for fuel, thereby saving the body’s small reserves of carbs for later on in the exercise.

6. No more $75 face cream when you drink coffee. Apply it to your skin or scalp .. it’s good there too.

Drinking coffee may help ward off the most diagnosed form of skin cancer. A study in the journal Cancer Research analyzed caffeine in coffee and found coffee drinkers had lower risks of developing basal cell carcinoma. Plus, drinking coffee improves wrinkles.  Win-win.

Some apply coffee topically to fix UV damage already done to skin. The International Journal of Dermatology found that caffeine-infused shampoo = significant simulation of the hair follicle.

And you wondered how to use those coffee grounds.

7. Coffee lessens Parkinson’s disease and cancer

Science Daily reported that not only does drinking coffee daily help folks become less likely to develop Parkinson’s disease, but that caffeine helps those who already have it.

The American Cancer Society has long studied health benefits of coffee:

less likely to get mouth & throat cancer
50% less likely to develop prostate cancer (6 cups!)
lower Risk of Endometrial Cancer

8. Drinking coffee keeps your brain healthier longer

Researchers from the University of South Florida and the University of Miami found that people older than 65 who had higher blood levels of caffeine developed Alzheimer’s two to four years later than non coffee drinkers.

Dr. Chuanhai Cao, a neuroscientist at the USF, and co-author of the study, said, “We are not saying that moderate coffee consumption will completely protect people from Alzheimer’s disease. However, we firmly believe that moderate coffee consumption can appreciably reduce your risk of Alzheimer’s or delay its onset.”

9. Sleep deprived? Just SMELL coffee

Anyone with a lousy night of sleep knows coffee does wonders for relieving stress. Now it’s backed by research (okay, with rats, but still): Researchers at the Seoul National University examined the brains of rats who were sleep deprived and discovered that coffee aromas = changes in brain proteins tied to stress.

Now if I can only find sleep deprived rats who like Haitian, I’d be in business.

10. Coffee helps keep off the pounds, type II diabetes.

Caffeine speeds metabolism and fat burning; black coffee is one of the lowest-calorie drink choices around (7 calories a cup).

People who drink four or more cups of coffee daily reduce chances of developing Type 2 diabetes by 50%. Subsequently, with every additional cup, the risk gets lowered by 7%.

4 cups + 7 cups = 99%?
