Meet Lourdes :
Lourdes Similien is a coffee bean sorter for Coopcab (Singing Rooster partner) since 2008.
She was born in Terre Longe, a small neighboring town of Thiotte — one of Haiti’s largest coffee sectors. There are 8 people in her family including her husband and 6 children. Her husband’s eyesight has been deteriorating, and she is the only breadwinner in her family. Coffee bean sorting provides only part of her family income, and she must grow / sell vegetables at local markets. The most enjoyable part of her day is talking with other bean sorters as she works. The most difficult part of her day is being hungry.
Lourdes’ dream is to build a family house and help finish building the local high school.
We are Singing Rooster — a social enterprise nonprofit working directly with Haiti’s small producers. We work with coffee and cacao farmers to produce gourmet products, open markets, and reforest Haiti with income-providing crops.
Our goal is provide economic sustainability for small farmer co-ops. Coffee seedling nurseries provide meaningful jobs for more Haitians. Not only can farmers harvest coffee, but also fruits like plantains and bananas that provide shade for coffee trees. As protectors of coffee trees, shade trees will not be cut down for charcoal production.
100% of your donation goes directly towards building a nursery of 32,000 seedlings that provide:
- over 640,000 pounds of coffee across 20-years
- over $2,200,000 in farmer income
- soil stability, watersheds, & water availability
- protection of taller, old-growth trees, bird habitats
- sustains thousands of jobs: dignity & autonomy
